So, this past few weeks I have been completing a self imposed ‘No Smartphone Challenge’, and as I had such a good response to it I thought I would post an update. So far the positives to taking part, really do seem to outweigh the negatives.
Positives:
- Not checking my phone repeatedly, saved on battery life. As an iphone user this is a really big deal.
- Not using my phone camera, has meant that I have taken my actual camera out a whole lot more. This has meant much better quality photographs and a reinstilled enthusiasm for the craft I studied for so long.
- It has encouraged me to think about what we used to do BEFORE our phones took over.
- Not having my phone out meant that I had more time to engage with my environment. Looking out of the window on the bus/train. Smiling at people who look at me and smile. Also more time watching PENNY engage with her environment. She waves at EVERYONE! She clearly loves the interaction!
- Not knowing the time, because I don’t wear a watch. You’d think that this is a negative, and obviously it can be, however It meant I had to pluck up the courage to ask someone the time. A good Icebreaker, if you need one.
- On day one of doing this challenge I met new people. On a bus, with their baby. Fair enough, they wont be my life long friends, but it was nice to actually practice my small talk. We also got some tips of where to get miss Penny some new shoes.
- Not seeing the message from your husband telling you that your 14 year old has broken your straighteners. Thus remaining calmer for longer and not spoiling the WHOLE day. (Maybe that’s just me?)
On to the negatives now, and by negatives I mean things that may need tweaking a bit.
- Meeting up with people becomes a challenge. Where were we meeting again? What time? I’ll just check my… oh wait a minute.
- Forgetting to be prepared and actually WRITE DOWN the info you need from a e-mail/text message/calendar before setting off.
- Not being able to use “apps” that you have become reliant on. Maps? Clock? Camera? Note-taking? Check in apps? – Preparation time is needed to avoid needing these apps.
- Not checking your messages throughout the day (If you are out for a while) tends to have a knock on effect on how much time you need to do it at a later time.
I actually found this challenge way easier than I thought I would. I am thinking that I might need to have ‘Blogging Office Hours’ however, as it does tend to take over a little once I get home, but definitely a hugely positive thing in the long run.
Let me know how you’ve got on if you have given this a try. Is it something you can’t imagine doing? What’s holding you back? I’d love to hear from you.
I honestly dont think I could give my phone up. But then maybe that in itself is a sign that I should!! x

I thought exactly the same as you, and I was surprised how easy it was. I haven’t completely given it up. You can see the rules I set myself in my original blog post 🙂

I would love to do it but I need my phone on me for work related stuff and for if the nursery need to call me 😦

I still use it to make calls and receive calls. But that’s all 🙂

Good job!
Hehe, I don’t have a smartphone or an iphone, and I’m still alive. Hahaha. xD
I do use my phone, but rarely. I mean, I rarely get text messages and calls, and I rarely check my social media on my phone (yes it has a browser, but wordpress is not loading on it. -.-) and, I guess, I’m the kind who interacts more with people?
Anyway, keep it up with the challenge. You can do it! 😀

It is weird because before I started blogging I was no way near on my phone as much as I am now and that i because I am constantly having to check my phone and it is becoming addictive. I really need to cut down the amount of time I am staring at a screen. Well done on creating new relationships though!

Thank you. I noticed the difference too once I started blogging x

I think I’d struggle to do this if I took up a challenge like that, but it’s really refreshing to see that it can be done. I seem to have gotten into the rhythm of hardly using my phone on weekends and using that time to be all there with my family. I consider M-F “work time” as a blogger, so leaving the phone on weekends is working for me. 🙂

My goodness! Well done hun – I don’t think I’d be able to do this LOL
I really want to give it a try though … If I do try it it will be maybe for 3 days.
I’ve bookmarked this post so I can link back to you.
Watch this space – Thanks for sharing hun!

This point makes a really valid point; we do rely on our phones and technology too much these days!

I really want to try it, it sounds great so far. And even the negatives will turn out to be positives in the end I’m sure- most of us have lost our ability to navigate properly. I know I have, sobbing forced to use something other than my phone can only be a good thing right?

Ekk you did amazingly – i love the positives, not sure if I could completely give mine up though. x

Sounds like you have really gotten on well with it, I like the sound of blogging office hours. I honestly don’t know what I would do without my phone though – it’s like my security blanket!

Brilliant that the positives outweigh the negatives (and even the negatives have a silver lining!) I like the idea of blogging office hours too!

All props to you because there’s absolutely no way I could manage this! I have a smart watch so I’d need it to be connected to my phone and I’d technically be cheating by getting various notifications through on there! :p Stephanie x

It is a little bit like giving up your right hand. I also liken it to what smokers go through when they quit. What do you do with your hands? lol

This would be so difficult! Especially if you think of something important to write down and you forget to bring a pen and paper! I also wouldn’t know what to do if I were meeting someone and was running late! Well done for doing this challenge though!

It is hard, but you do need to be organised with things such as a pen and paper. I do allow myself 2 text message checks throughout the day, so I can use one if running late. Max 5 minutes each 🙂 I can also use the phone as a phone and make a call instead 🙂

Wow, I don’t think I’d be able to do it! It’s amazing how such a small device can have so much power in our lives. This is definitely something I should consider doing xx

Sounds like a really interesting challenge, but I’d literally be lost without my Maps app. So I’d have to try it at a time when I knew I wasn’t going anywhere new!!

Great challenge – we tried something similar a while ago and locked our smartphones away whilst watching tv. I actually enjoyed it!

You’ve got a lot of will power. I’m not sure I could do this, but I do know I need to check my phone way less!

What a fab idea! I try not to use my phone too much during the day as I don’t want Lily seeing me using it all of the time, I try to pay attention to her instead and just check it every now and then. X

I was wondering how you were getting on with this challenge. Well done, I really don’t think I’d be able to do it unless I scheduled everything but then I’d miss it too much especially Instagram x

Spend time without my smartphone? That’s a joke, right?! 😉 It’s a quandary, as my iPhone allows me to work flexibly around my children, yet it also means I’m never quite NOT working. The perils of modern life, huh??? x

Exactly. It’s about finding what works for you. But then evaluating every now an then if it really is working 🙂

This is such an interesting thing to do. I couldn’t imagine life without a smartphone. I imagine the battery life difference would be a big one.
